BIRD RACE DAY SAT 5 SEPT
The half yearly attempt to see as many species in a day took place on Saturday 5th September. Weather conditions were very good – no rain , although cool in the morning the day was mostly sunny particularly after 10.30.
8 Observers took part plus 1 ringer at South Milton Ley who probably had his worst mornings ringing in September for years . With only light NNE breezes, offshore passage almost no existent. A long time since we recorded more duck on Thurlestone Marsh than South Huish Marsh – with the front pool now completely dry and the back 60% dry.
Started the day with an hours garden watch at 06.30 managed 33 species by 07.30 including HOBBY, SHOVELER, WATER RAIL, BLACKCAP, STOCK DOVE and REED BUNTING, and BLACK TAILED GODWIT.
Using Bobs old car park as the focal meeting point, Graham Daw started his 3 ½ hour sea watch, whilst Martin Daw, Nick Townsend, Chris Bond and myself did South Huish Marsh, Eric and Alan covered the back of Thurlestone Church area, Golf Course and Yarmer Beach.

Returning home at 18.00 I decided to sit on my balcony in the hope of picking up a flight of CANADA GEESE coming in to roost – sadly none appeared, however the time was well spent when at 18.45 a female MERLIN flew down the valley and even more so at 19.40 when a SHORT EARED OWL flew around the marsh before landing on the far side of the marsh.
Our final total of 87 species compared well with last year’s 84 – returns from the other participants were:-
